About this Artist

Raised near the rolling shores of Chesapeake Bay, Kristin’s perspective was strongly shaped by the visual clash of industry and nature in and around the bustling American port town of Baltimore. Descended from a long line of artists and craftsmen, Kristin has a family history in highly tactile expressions of creativity. Her grandfather was a furniture maker; her mother is a painter. Family influences in materials and craftsmanship helped fuel Kristin’s interest in textiles—both natural and synthetic textures and patterns. Kristin has traveled and studied extensively in Europe, Africa, and the United States where she honed her eye and trademark ability to create visual texture with a rich, adventurous color palette and expressive techniques.

Kristin’s ceramic work began as an escape. Once the exploration began, she quickly discovered the medium matched the constant vulnerability that surrounded her. Working with clay, especially porcelain (her material of choice), requires a great amount of patience and care to produce. At each step of the process there is the looming question, will it survive? Even when the piece is complete and strong from the kiln’s firings there is a sense of fragility to the artwork. The constant delicate aesthetic of ceramics reminds us that at all times things are not certain.
